Magic Mushrooms Poisoning

CategoryToxicology
LocationRack and row to be confirmed

Description

Magic mushrooms contain psilocybin, which is converted to psilocin and acts predominantly on serotonin 5-HT₂A receptors, producing altered perception, hallucinations, anxiety, confusion and behavioural changes. In severe intoxication, toxic-metabolic encephalopathy may occur. A notable reported MRI finding is a cytotoxic lesion of the splenium of the corpus callosum (CLOCC), showing restricted diffusion, thought to represent cytotoxic/intramyelinic edema. Such splenial lesions are often reversible as the neurological condition improves.
