Description

The Circle of Willis is a ring of arteries at the base of the brain that connects the internal carotid arteries and the vertebro-basilar system to provide a continuous, alternative blood supply. This collateral network reduces the risk of brain damage (ischemia) from blockages by re-routing blood flow. Its main components are the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries, linked by the anterior and posterior communicating arteries.
