Inf surface of cerebellum
Description
The inferior surface of the cerebellum is crucial from both an anatomical and forensic perspective due to its complex relationship with the brainstem, key cranial nerves and major blood vessels within the confined space of the posterior cranial fossa. Anatomically, this surface features important structures like the cerebellar tonsils and the flocculonodular lobe, which are vital landmarks for neurosurgical procedures, as they lie adjacent to the medulla oblongata and the fourth ventricle. The tonsils, in particular, are clinically significant as their displacement through the foramen magnum characterizes Chiari I malformation.
